Woodridge, IL—Elevance Renewable Sciences, Inc., a high-growth specialty chemicals company that creates novel specialty chemicals from natural oils, July 14 announced a new collaboration with Genting Plantations Berhad through Genting Integrated Biorefinery Sdn Bhd (GIB), to be located in the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) in Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia.

The 25:75 collaboration between Elevance and Genting Plantations Berhad will build a 240,000 MT metathesis biorefinery based on Elevance's proprietary metathesis technology, and will produce renewable, high-performance olefins and specialty chemicals that can be used in multiple end-product applications, including lubricants, surfactants and detergents.

As part of the collaboration agreement, GIB has agreed to pay Elevance license and design fees, and Elevance will provide intellectual property rights, knowledge transfer, and technical and consulting services.

Elevance will also be exclusively responsible for the sale of all specialty chemicals that are produced at the biorefinery.

"This collaboration extends our ability to deliver novel products with improved performance, helping to achieve a paradigm shift in the way companies are addressing industry and consumer demand — making better products while leaving a smaller environmental footprint — in personal care products, detergents and cleaners, engineered polymers, lubricants and additives, and other specialty chemicals markets," said Elevance CEO K'Lynne Johnson.

"Genting Integrated Biorefinery will spearhead our Group's expansion into the high value-added palm oil downstream segment that will showcase palm oil's immense potential to serve an ever-increasing variety of applications and further complement the many pioneering initiatives we are pursuing in our ongoing drive to unlock palm oil's full potential through scientific innovation," said Genting Plantations Berhad Chief Executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

The Elevance metathesis biorefinery produces multiple high-value chemical streams similar to petroleum-based refineries.

Elevance's low-pressure, low-temperature process uses Nobel Prize-winning innovations in metathesis catalysis that consume significantly less energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 percent compared to petrochemical technologies.

A highly efficient, selective catalyst is used to break down natural oils and recombine fragments, resulting in a process with lower source pollution, production costs and capital expenditures than petrochemical refineries.

The wife of a New Zealander who was aboard the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is "disgusted" at the release of a fictional account of the mystery
Three months after the jet vanished on a flight to Beijing with 239 people on board, New Zealand author Scott Maka has released the thriller novella MH370, an e-book
Danica Weeks, the wife of missing New Zealander Paul Weeks, said releasing a book so soon after the tragedy and without information on what happened made her angry
It was hurtful to the families of the people on board the flight, Ms Weeks said
"I'd rather they'd put their efforts to helping them find the truth, to be honest," she said. "We're going to be spending the rest of our lives doing that"
Ms Weeks said people wanting to write books and make movies about the mystery should wait until they had all the information
The author, with the pen name Scott Maka, said he never intended for the relatives of the missing families to be the book's audience or even find out about it
"I wasn't writing it for the families," he said
Mr Maka, who is based in Malaysia, said he wanted to apologise to Ms Weeks
"I'm saddened to hear that she's reacted like that, I'm upset that she's upset"
The author acknowledged the book's publication came amid controversy sparked by US and Indian studios working on MH370 films
He said he decided to write the novella after a "hair-raising" Air Asia flight between Malaysia and Vietnam just a week after the aircraft's disappearance

Danica Weeks' husband Paul Weeks was on board the Malaysia Airlines flight
